The legendary Italian defender has announced his retirement
Legendary Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci has announced his retirement from football at the end of the season, according to Fenerbahçe's official website.
"It has been a pleasure to be part of this wonderful family. I have tried to show my best both on and off the field. But most importantly, today we will fight our last battle. I want to end my career with a trophy, and we have a chance to become champions. Thank you all for your support," commented the 37-year-old Bonucci.
Today, May 26, Bonucci will play his final match for Fenerbahçe. If Fenerbahçe wins and Galatasaray loses in the parallel match, Bonucci's team will be crowned Turkish champions for 2024.
The Italian veteran joined the "Canaries" in January. He has played 12 matches for the Istanbul team and provided one assist.
Bonucci is best known for his time at Juventus, where he made 502 appearances over 12 years. With the Italian national team, he became a European champion in 2021.
