The last dance isn't over? Fresh uncertainty surrounds Messi's Argentina future
Messi has left Argentina waiting for the answer only he can give.
Details: According to ESPN Argentina, there is now renewed uncertainty surrounding Lionel Messi's future with the Argentina national team. The 39-year-old captain has still not publicly announced that his international career is over, meaning his next step with the Albiceleste remains unresolved.
Speculation over Messi's future intensified after the 2026 World Cup. Argentina reached a second consecutive final but lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time on July 19. Messi played the entire decisive match, but afterward there was no definitive announcement about whether it had been his final appearance for the national team.
Earlier this month, Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia stressed that nobody inside the federation intends to pressure Messi into making a decision. Tapia said the choice over when to step away belongs entirely to the player and that he should be allowed to continue enjoying football before deciding what comes next.
For now, Argentina therefore have no official farewell to their legendary captain and no confirmation that he intends to continue. It is worth noting that Messi produced eight goals and four assists at the 2026 World Cup. Following the final against Spain, he had reached 207 senior appearances and 125 goals for Argentina.
