The Elephants and the Amazons will have to wait for the second leg to decide the winner of the final round of African qualifiers for the World Cup in Poland.

The two U20 women’s teams faced off on Saturday 2 May 2026 at‎ the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe. The Ivory Coast side opened the scoring before being pegged back by their Beninese opponents.

Nda Nadege put her team ahead in the 29th minute, 1-0. The Elephants, playing at home, thought they had taken control of the match. However, Benin fought back. R. Gandonou levelled the score at 1-1. The score remained unchanged until the final whistle.

The two teams will meet again in a few days’ time in Lomé, Togo, for the return leg. The winner of this second leg will secure their place at the 2026 U20 Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Poland.
