The German champions set their sights on signing the former Liverpool player
Bayer Leverkusen has showcased an incredible season. Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, the club won the championship title for the first time in its history and suffered its first and only defeat at the very end of the season in the Europa League final.
Following such a successful season, many of the club’s stars have attracted interest from other top clubs, and Bayer has been forced to look for replacements. One such player is former Liverpool defender Joël Matip.
According to reports by Fabrizio Romano, Bayer is progressing in signing the Cameroonian and is considering him for the central defender position.
Matip left Liverpool after eight years with the team and has received several offers. However, the German champions have shown the greatest interest and are considered favorites in the race for the player.
Matip is well-acquainted with the German club. He is a product of the Weitmar 45 sports school and later joined the Bochum academy before moving to Schalke in 2000. With Schalke, he won both the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup.
