The Gambia crowned WAFU-A champions following their victory over Senegal
The young Gambian side got the better of their Senegalese counterparts in a closely fought final at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium.
The two sides were locked at a stalemate during normal time. Senegal, however, had one last chance to make the difference in stoppage time. Reduced to ten men following Mahamet Ba’s sending-off in the 88th minute, the young lions were awarded a penalty in the 92nd minute.
Souleymane Commissaire Faye, however, failed to convert the spot-kick, leaving the two teams level at the end of normal time. The match therefore went to a penalty shoot-out. In the shoot-out, The Gambia proved more clinical and won 5–3 to claim the WAFU-A U17 tournament title.
Despite this defeat in the final, Senegal also achieved a positive result, as both finalists have qualified for the upcoming U17 Africa Cup of Nations. The continental competition will take place in Morocco, where The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea will represent the WAFU-A zone.
