On Friday, August 23rd, the Bundesliga kicked off with Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning champions, visiting Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The first half proceeded rather calmly, but at the start of the second half, the match was interrupted due to fan behavior. The disruption occurred when fans began using pyrotechnics, filling the field with thick smoke. The referee halted the game in the 46th minute, and it resumed in the 53rd minute.
At the time of the interruption, Bayer Leverkusen was leading 2-0.
