Since July, a proposed bill has been under consideration in England to create a governing body that would oversee the top five divisions of men's football in the country. This body is intended to regulate the licensing system for English clubs, scrutinize their owners and directors, and give fans a voice in key decision-making processes. However, this move could result in England being excluded from UEFA tournaments and losing the opportunity to host Euro 2028.

Details: According to the BBC, UEFA may take such a decision due to concerns about government interference in the development of football. The Union of European Football Associations believes that football governance should be handled exclusively by the Football Association (FA).

A letter has already been sent to the UK's Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, from UEFA’s general secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, warning against such a move. In the letter, he emphasized that the FA, which welcomed the idea of creating such a regulator, must protect its independence in line with UEFA and FIFA statutes.

Quote: "We remain concerned, as typically, the regulation of football should be carried out by the national federation.

This issue arises from one of UEFA's key requirements, which is that there should be no government interference in football organization.

We have specific rules to ensure the autonomy of sport and fairness in sporting competitions. The ultimate sanction for this would be the exclusion of the federation from UEFA, and teams from competitions."

Reminder: The 2028 European Championship is scheduled to be held in the UK and Ireland. The letter from Theodoridis likely outlined the maximum punishment, which UEFA could indeed impose. If the FA is excluded from UEFA, English clubs could be banned from the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, while the national team would be barred from participating in the Nations League and lose the right to host Euro 2028.
