The challenger is here! Ex-Tottenham star Vega declares war on Infantino
After months of chaos, resignations and open revolt against Gianni Infantino, world football finally has a declared challenger. And it is not a federation president or a royal, but a former Tottenham defender.
Details: According to BBC Sport, 55-year-old Ramon Vega has announced his intention to stand against Gianni Infantino in next year's FIFA presidential election, becoming the first candidate to publicly confirm his bid. The former Swiss international, who also represented Celtic and Watford before retiring in 2004 and building a career in finance, says he wants to reunite the global football family and deliver fundamental reform at FIFA, declaring that football is in the emergency room, on life support.

Vega did not hold back in his manifesto, accusing the current leadership of demoralising the game and blaming weak governance for the erosion of trust across the global football family. The Swiss veteran promised genuine and lasting reform, modernisation of FIFA for the 21st century and an end to ego-driven battles within football administration, insisting that the sport belongs to players, coaches, referees, supporters and communities rather than to presidents and confederations. It is not his first attempt at the role: Vega explored a bid in 2015 in the aftermath of Sepp Blatter's suspension and announced in 2019 that he would challenge Infantino, only to fail to secure the backing of the required five of FIFA's 211 member associations and miss the ballot entirely. This time, he claims, things are different and the support is in place.
It's worth noting that Infantino has led FIFA since February 2016 and intends to stand again, unveiling the slogan Football belongs to everyone, everywhere in the world for his campaign. The timing of Vega's bid is anything but accidental: UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have all demanded Infantino's resignation over the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise project, while England, Wales, Ireland, Croatia, Albania and Greece have withdrawn their support for his re-election. The March 2027 vote looms as the most unpredictable FIFA election in a decade, and Vega's declaration turns the race from a coronation into a contest.
Reminder: A lifeline from the Arab world! Infantino gets powerful backing amid the revolt.
