Today, the world was shaken by the news of the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. In connection with this event, historians have found a remarkable link between the pontiff's passing and the success of the Serie C club Avellino.
Details: The fact is, every time Avellino is promoted or relegated, a Pope passes away:
- 1958: promotion to Serie C, Pius XII died.
- 1963: another promotion, John XXIII died.
- 1978: Avellino reached Serie A, and two Popes died that year - Paul VI and John Paul I.
- 2005: the club rose to Serie B, John Paul II died.
- 2013: return to Serie B, Benedict XVI abdicated.
Yesterday, Avellino officially returned to Serie B, and today, the tragic news came from the Vatican.
It is worth noting that in January this year, Pope Francis visited Avellino, where he blessed the football club and signed one of their jerseys.
