The Al Ahly legend recounts how the Swiss coach’s arrival ended his 16-year journey, dashing hopes of surpassing Dani Alves’ trophy record
Legendary Al Ahly captain Hossam Ashour has disclosed the behind-the-scenes events that dashed his ambition to break Brazilian star Dani Alves’ record for the most trophies won by a footballer. Ashour left Al Ahly in 2020 after a glittering career spanning 16 years.
Ashour played for Al Ahly’s first team from 2004 to 2020, clinching an impressive 36 titles across all competitions.
However, the appointment of Swiss coach René Weiler in the summer of 2019 marked the end of Ashour’s journey with the Egyptian and African football powerhouse.
Speaking in an interview on Egypt’s ETC channel, Ashour said, “Weiler didn’t like me. When he arrived at Al Ahly, he was informed that I was the most decorated player in the club’s history.”
He added, “Weiler asked me how many titles I had won with Al Ahly, and I replied, ‘36.’ His response was, ‘That’s enough for you,’ signaling his desire for me to retire.”
Ashour explained, “I dreamed of breaking Dani Alves’ record. I was confident I could achieve it if I stayed with Al Ahly.” However, he eventually moved to Al Ittihad Alexandria after his departure.
“I wanted to become the most decorated footballer in the world, but my journey with Al Ahly ended because of Weiler,” Ashour concluded.
