The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed the expansion from 24 to 28 nations during a press conference.

The Africa Cup of Nations is set to enter a new era. The continent’s most prestigious competition will now feature 28 national teams from 2027 onwards.

This decision was confirmed on Wednesday 22 July by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press conference. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda which will co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations from 19 June to 17 July, will therefore welcome 28 countries.

Under this new format, four additional teams will now have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament.
