This was one of the announcements made by the president of the Confederation of African Football on Sunday 29 March following a meeting of the Executive Committee of African football’s governing body.
African football is embarking on a revolution. The Africa Cup of Nations is set to reach a new milestone. Whilst the continental competition expanded from 16 to 24 teams in 2019, it will now feature 28 nations divided into seven groups of four teams.
This means there will be four more participating nations in the tournament’s final phase. This reform will come into effect when the Africa Cup of Nations is held every four years. That said, the number of participating teams will increase from the 2028 edition onwards.
