“That's when Floyd became a businessman.” De La Hoya about the failed rematch with Mayweather
Former fighter and now promoter Oscar De La Hoya, recalled the time when their rematch with Mayweather fell through in 2008.
"After Floyd beat me, he became 'Money' Mayweather. He became a businessman.
We had a [clause] for a rematch in the contract for one year. Guess what Floyd did? He retired for one year and one day, letting the contract expire," the promoter told BoxingScene.
It's worth noting that this recollection is not entirely accurate. The De La Hoya vs. Mayweather fight took place in May 2007. Floyd announced his retirement afterward, but less than three months later, he announced his return to face Ricky Hatton that same year, a fight promoted by Golden Boy.
Then, in 2008, Mayweather decided to retire again and declined the rematch with De La Hoya. He returned in 2009 to face Juan Manuel Márquez.
