That's quite a drop! Tottenham legend becomes Monterrey kitman
Erik Lamela has found a rather unconventional way to stay close to the touchline.
Details: Former Tottenham and Sevilla forward Erik Lamela has been officially registered at Monterrey as a kit manager, although in reality, he will be working as part of Matías Almeyda's coaching staff. The reason? He doesn't yet have a coaching license.
The 34-year-old Argentine ended his playing career in the summer of 2025. His last club was Greek side AEK, where he moved after his stint with Sevilla.
After hanging up his boots, Lamela returned to the Spanish club and joined Matías Almeyda's coaching staff. When Almeyda left Sevilla to take charge of Monterrey, the former player followed him to Mexico.
However, Lamela is not yet officially allowed to take up a coaching position. According to Article 17.1 of the Liga MX regulations, you must hold the appropriate qualification to be registered as a member of the coaching staff.
Monterrey management found a creative workaround, registering the Argentine as a kit manager. Thanks to this status, Lamela can be present on the bench during matches and effectively serve as an assistant coach.
It's reported that the former footballer is already working towards obtaining his UEFA Pro license. Once he completes his studies, Monterrey will be able to officially register him as a coach.
It's worth noting that Lamela played 257 matches for Tottenham and scored 37 goals. In 2021, the Argentine won the Puskás Award for his spectacular rabona goal in the North London derby against Arsenal.
