English football has seen its fair share of high-caliber midfielders over the years. Among them, many place former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, a view not shared by ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Now, another legendary midfielder has stepped up to defend Stevie G.

Details: Ferguson’s opinion that Gerrard was never a top player left Zinedine Zidane stunned, with the Frenchman labeling the Scottish icon’s remarks as “strange and not right.”

Quote: “For two or three years, Gerrard was the best midfielder in the world. He remained loyal to Liverpool for his entire career—which, of course, is fantastic for the club—but had he wanted to leave four or five years ago, every top club in Europe would have tried to sign him. Ferguson is undoubtedly one of the most successful managers in football history. But his comments about Gerrard struck me as very strange. To say he’s not a top player—that’s just not right,” Zidane was quoted as saying by GIVEMESPORT.
