Tanzania have released a 53-man provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as head coach Miguel Gamondi begins final preparations for a tough Group C campaign that includes a December 23 clash with Nigeria.

The squad, similar in size to the Super Eagles’ 54-man list, is heavily dominated by local players. Thirty-nine of the call-ups play in the Tanzanian league, with Azam FC providing 10 players. Young Africans and Simba SC follow with seven each, while Singida Black Stars contribute five.

Gamondi also included several foreign-based players to strengthen the squad. Among them is 20-year-old Cyprian Kachwele of Vancouver Whitecaps II, who has recorded 11 goal involvements in 19 matches. Forward Kelvin John is also listed after posting 12 goal contributions in 21 appearances for Danish side AaB. They join experienced striker Mbwana Samatta, who features in France’s Ligue 1 with Le Havre.

Tanzania, seeking their first-ever AFCON knockout appearance, will also face Uganda on December 27 and Tunisia on December 30. The Taifa Stars have appeared at the tournament three times but have never progressed from the group stage. Their closest attempt came in 2023 after draws with Zambia and DR Congo.
