River Plate’s pursuit of Juan Portillo hit its first roadblock as Talleres turned down the club's opening offer for the versatile defender. Marcelo Gallardo personally requested Portillo as a reinforcement, prompting River to offer $4 million for 80% of his rights, along with the potential loan of one or two players. Talleres, however, made their stance clear: they want $6.8 million for that share.

The Córdoba-based club’s firm response echoes past negotiations between the two teams, such as the lengthy and costly transfer of Rodrigo Villagra. Despite initial resistance, River is expected to return with an improved offer, especially as the player himself might apply pressure. Reports suggest Portillo could opt to skip training to push for the move, aiming to influence the club's management led by Andrés Fassi. Talleres is experiencing turmoil after early reports from Tuesday signal Diego Cocca has stepped down as head coach, two months after his arrival and before his official debut.

Portillo’s appeal lies in his flexibility. A natural center-back, he can play on either side of a central duo, fill in as a fullback on both flanks, or operate as a holding midfielder. Standing at 1.82 meters, he combines solid one-on-one defending with composure on the ball and forward-driving intent. His adaptability has made him a priority target for River, who remain committed to securing his signing.
