Swiatek explained why she unexpectedly lost in the 1/16 finals of Wimbledon 2024
On July 6, world number one Iga Świątek ended her run at Wimbledon 2024.
In the 1/16 finals, the Polish player unexpectedly lost to Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan in three sets, with scores of 6:3, 1:6, 2:6.
After the match, Świątek held a press conference where she explained the reasons behind her poor performance:
"Did Putintseva do it all by herself? I think it's never entirely about one person. We're playing a tennis match. It's also about how I played. I completely let her back into the game in the second set. I shouldn't have done that. I made some mistakes. But she certainly took her chance.
How important is the Wimbledon title to me? If I had another Wimbledon in two months, I would be determined and, of course, very focused on preparing for it. But it's a year away. I don't know what will happen in a year. I am determined at every tournament.
This part of the season is not easy. It's the middle of the season, and we are changing surfaces. Moving from one surface, where I feel I'm playing the best tennis of my life, to another surface, where it's a bit more challenging, is not easy. All of this is somewhat related to why I didn't perform well at Wimbledon, but again, I feel I will handle it better. If I had more energy during the tournament, I could have managed it and focused on the right things," said Iga.
