SuperSport United assistant coach Andre Arendse expressed immense pride in his players' efforts despite their heartbreaking elimination from the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals against Orlando Pirates.

Late Drama Ends SuperSport’s Cup Hopes

SuperSport appeared destined for defeat with the game deep into second-half stoppage time, trailing 2-1 after defensive lapses led to goals from Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Terence Dzvukamanja, and Evidence Makgopa. However, a moment of individual brilliance from Gape Moralo forced extra time.

Christian Saile had a golden opportunity to secure a semifinal spot but failed to find Bradley Grobler, who was in a prime scoring position. The DR Congo forward’s miss proved costly as Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine saved his penalty in sudden death, paving the way for Goodman Mosele to seal a 5-4 shootout victory for the Buccaneers.

Arendse Reflects on a Missed Opportunity

“I feel for them. I don’t know who’s more tired, the players or me—I kicked every ball with them, headed every ball with them,” Arendse said post-match. “They gave me so much to be proud of today, and that’s all we can ask for as coaches.”

Despite the disappointment, Arendse highlighted his team's strong defensive performance against Pirates’ possession-based style. “We got it 100% correct today. We had chances—it could have easily been two, three, or four goals for us. Lungu missed early, Saile had a chance to pass to Bradley. There’s so much we can take from this.”

Focus Shifts Back to the League

With their Nedbank Cup journey over, SuperSport United now turn their attention back to the league. The club is out of contention for silverware this season but will look to finish strongly in their domestic campaign.
