Super Eagles Debutant Ebenezer Akinsanmiro Reveals How He Quit Football to Learn Barbing
New Super Eagles call-up Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has shared an inspiring story of resilience and determination, revealing that he once stepped away from football for several years to learn a trade as a barber.
The 21-year-old midfielder opened up about his journey during an interview with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) media team on Monday, offering insight into his humble beginnings and the support system that kept his football dream alive.
Akinsanmiro credited his passion for football to his family, particularly his father and brothers, who all played the game and served as early role models in his career.
“Well, daddy inspired me a lot, he was once a footballer, and my two brothers too. They were footballers too. I took a lot of interest in the game while watching them play, ” he told the Super Eagles media.
Despite his love for the game, Akinsanmiro revealed that there was a period when he put football on hold and focused on learning a skill that could support him outside the sport.
“Then, there was a time I took a break from football to learn barbing. I’m a professional barber too. I must thank my father and brothers for their support.”
His decision to learn barbing highlights the challenges many young African footballers face and underscores the importance of having a backup plan while pursuing a sporting career.
Akinsanmiro is one of five new players invited to the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria continues preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles are set to face the Pharaohs of Egypt in an international friendly on Tuesday, December 16, a match that will give Akinsanmiro and other new invitees a chance to impress as they push for a place in the AFCON squad.
