Former Universitario and Juan Aurich coach Luis Fernando Suárez attended the Peru vs Colombia World Cup qualifier in Barranquilla and offered his thoughts on what he saw from Jorge Fossati’s team.

“The draw was fair. Peru defended well and Colombia were unpredictable. In the last 30 minutes, they had more speed but still didn’t create many chances,” said the Colombian manager, who praised Peru’s tactical discipline.

For Suárez, Peru’s mindset should be short-term. “They shouldn’t think about qualification. They must focus on the next match. That game against Colombia can boost their confidence going into the Ecuador match. Peru has to take it step by step.”

On Paolo Guerrero’s condition, Suárez reflected on the need for generational change. “Latin American teams like Chile got stuck with golden generations. I think Peru is facing the same challenge. They need to look inward and build from the ground up,” he said. Still, he acknowledged Guerrero’s influence: “A player like him can be vital for young teammates. His professionalism and leadership are assets.”

Looking ahead to the game against Ecuador, Suárez made a clear point. “This is more than just football. It’s a historic matchup. The coach must use this moment wisely. It’s a chance to turn things around.”

Currently without a team, Suárez said he’s staying active. “I’m resting now and waiting for the right opportunity,” he told El Comercio.
