A tense moment unfolded live on air as a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Lima during the Torneo Apertura match between Sporting Cristal and Deportivo Garcilaso on Sunday, June 15. According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), the quake struck at 11:35 a.m. local time with an epicenter 30 kilometers southwest of Callao and a depth of 49 kilometers.

The seismic event interrupted the match at Estadio Alberto Gallardo, where L1 MAX commentators quickly reacted on live television. “Careful, let’s stay calm, everyone,” said announcer Rosa María Muñoz. Percy Ramos followed up: “It’s an earthquake happening right now, please remain calm, this is a quake in Lima—it’s already passing.”

According to La República, the game was paused for a few minutes as stadium officials ensured the safety of those in attendance. No injuries or damages were immediately reported. Muñoz reminded the audience, “We ask for calm, especially from the fans at Alberto Gallardo.” Ramos concluded with a reassuring note: “It’s over now, contact your loved ones, and let’s hope everyone is safe at home.”

The tremor was felt across multiple districts in Lima and Callao, but the swift response from both the broadcast team and stadium personnel helped ease public anxiety.
