A European night in Sion was overshadowed by violence before a ball was even kicked.

Details: Ajax and Sion fans got into a fight in the Swiss city before tonight's Conference League playoff match. Footage shared online shows dozens of supporters clashing in the street, with reports indicating that travelling Ajax fans attacked a local bar, forcing police to use tear gas to disperse the rioters.

Despite the ugly scenes outside, the match itself delivered pure entertainment: Ajax came from a goal down at half-time to beat Sion 4:2 at the Stade de Tourbillon, with summer signing Julian Brandt leading the comeback. The Dutch giants will host the Swiss side in the return leg in Amsterdam on August 27 with one foot already in the league phase.

Sadly, this is far from the first time Ajax's travelling support has made headlines for the wrong reasons: in 2024 their fans were detained in Prague after trying to break into Slavia's stadium, while the abandoned derby against Feyenoord in 2023 remains one of the darkest nights in Dutch football. It's worth noting that UEFA is likely to review tonight's incidents, and both clubs could face sanctions.

Reminder: Unexpected twist! Premier League star striker agrees terms with Saudi giants.
