Stellenbosch FC Ready to Shock Africa: A Chance to Make CAF Semifinals After Zamalek Stalemate
South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC is poised to make history in the CAF Confederation Cup. After holding Egyptian giants Zamalek to a goalless draw in Cape Town, the ambitious side now heads to Cairo with a spot in the semifinals within reach.
A Chance to Shock the Continent
Stellenbosch FC needs a scoring draw in the return leg on Wednesday, April 9, at 16:00 GMT at the Cairo International Stadium to secure their first-ever continental semifinal berth.
Coach Steve Barker is confident ahead of the clash, stating, “The main objective was always to go to Cairo having a chance... I believe the pressure shifts to Zamalek.”
A Game-Changing Investment: R395 Million Stadium Project
Off the field, Stellenbosch FC has unveiled a game-changing R395 million investment — a new stadium at the Van der Stel Sports Complex. The ambitious project includes:
- A 5,000-seat stadium, expandable to 10,000
- Four international-size grass pitches
- Six multi-purpose fields
- A sports high school and student residence
- A 600–800 bay parking facility
The club will develop and manage the site over a 30-year term, while ownership remains with the Stellenbosch Municipality.
CEO Rob Benadie emphasized the broader vision behind the project, stating, “This is more than football. It’s a long-term vision for inclusive growth, education, and opportunity.”
