Stellenbosch FC achieved two significant milestones in their quest for a Top 3 finish in the Betway Premiership, securing a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

The win marked their first-ever triumph over Sekhukhune in 10 meetings, breaking a streak of eight defeats and two draws. Additionally, it was the first time Stellenbosch had recorded four consecutive away victories in the Premiership. The victory extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches, strengthening their bid for a CAF Confederation Cup qualification.

Barker Praises Team’s Performance and Pitch Conditions

“This is a massively important result for us. Both teams share the ambition of finishing in the top three,” said coach Steve Barker.

“It’s great to go into the FIFA break sitting in third place, and we can now look forward to the remainder of the season. We also have a big CAF quarter-final in April against Zamalek to prepare for. The break has come at a good time after a physically and emotionally demanding run of games.”

Barker also praised the playing surface at Peter Mokaba Stadium, an endorsement that will please Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos ahead of South Africa’s clash with Lesotho at the venue.

“I wish I could take the pitch back home with me. Credit to the stadium management because it is in great condition,” Barker added.

Sekhukhune United’s Battle for Top Three

Sekhukhune, now sitting one point behind Stellenbosch in the race for a CAF Confederation Cup spot, will look to bounce back after their narrow defeat. Newly appointed coach Eric Tinkler has brought in Mark van Heerden as his assistant to help implement his philosophy.

“Mark is somebody I have worked with before. He is now qualified with a UEFA B License and understands my philosophy,” said Tinkler. “We also have Paulus Masehe, who is learning and growing in his role.”

Tinkler acknowledges there is still much work to do with eight games left in the season. “This team has talent and experience, but we need to add certain elements to stay competitive and build a strong foundation for the future.”

Looking Ahead

The league will pause for the international break, with Stellenbosch returning to action on April 2 for a massive CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final first leg against defending champions Zamalek.
