Skiing sensation Jarl Magnus Riiber has revealed the serious health issues that have plagued him throughout the season, reports Bild. Despite his struggles, the Norwegian has continued competing—and winning—and currently leads the overall World Cup standings.
Riiber first spoke about his illness in November, admitting that he had contracted a stomach virus and spent a month experiencing severe gastrointestinal bleeding. At the time, doctors were unable to determine the cause of his condition. Only recently was the true diagnosis confirmed—Crohn’s disease.
The illness, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, is characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Riiber acknowledged that his condition is something he will have to manage for the rest of his life.
However, the skier remains optimistic, stating that medication has improved his condition.
Jarl Magnus Riiber is the most successful Nordic combined athlete in history. He boasts 76 World Cup victories, eight world championship titles, and an Olympic silver medal. He won last season’s overall World Cup title and is on track to defend it this year—despite all the challenges he has faced.
