"South African players suffer in MSL" according to Olwethu Makhanya Olwethu Makhanya

Prior to his arrival in the first team, South African defender Olwethu Makhanya made a special performance with the second team of the American Philadelphia Union starting from July 2023 when he decided to leave his former team Stellenbosch FC after living a special period with them and stealing club lights and then chose to go to America with a bold step at such a young age.

Due to his outstanding performance at the age of only 20, the young defender got the opportunity to play most of the first four matches of this season with the first team, and he expressed his opinion that South African players face a big difference when playing in MLS, which he described as a faster and more tactical league.

I would say the difference is definitely not the talent, I feel like South Africans have the talent, but the only challenge we experience is the work rate because it is just different and is very high, The intensity of the league, the speed and all that. That would be the challenge, I feel like the game is more faster this side. It’s very more tactical than back home. So, this side, it’s just more detailed, and they work way harder than players back home.
