South African Duo Shine as Sundowns and Pirates Edge Closer to CAF Semis
South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates took a big step toward the CAF Champions League semifinals, securing vital 1-0 victories in their quarterfinal first legs on Tuesday.
At Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Peter Shalulile proved decisive, scoring the winner for Sundowns against Esperance de Tunis early in the second half. The Namibian striker extended his impressive record to 19 goals this season, putting the Brazilians in control before the return leg in Tunisia.
Pirates Stun MC Alger as Nkota Strikes Late
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates stunned MC Alger in Douera, with Mohau Nkota coming off the bench to net the match-winner in the 66th minute. Pirates also had goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to thank, as he delivered a Player of the Match performance, making five crucial saves to ensure a priceless away win.
Al Ahly and Pyramids Secure Big Wins
In other matches, Al Ahly continued their title defense with a 1-0 victory over Al Hilal Omdurman, while Pyramids FC dominated FAR Rabat with a 4-1 thrashing, led by Fiston Mayele’s brace.
Return Legs Set for April 8 and 9
The return legs will take place on April 8, except for Pirates vs. MC Alger, which is scheduled for April 9. Both South African clubs are in prime position, but they must finish the job to keep their CAF Champions League dreams alive.
