South African Club Royal AM Faces Sale Amid Financial Chaos
South African football is set to witness the final chapter of the Royal AM saga, as the financially troubled club is officially up for sale. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has initiated the sale process to recover R40 million in unpaid tax debts owed by owner Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize.
Bidding Process and Financial Burdens
- A deposit of R1 million is required from prospective purchasers when the auction for Royal AM begins on March 14.
- On March 17, the winning bid will be revealed, and the new owners are anticipated to take on all of the club's outstanding obligations.
- Financial analysts estimate that managing the club will require at least R65 million in the first month, covering unpaid salaries, travel expenses, and outstanding wages owed to players such as Samir Nurković (R15 million).
- The club remains under a FIFA-imposed transfer ban until its financial obligations are settled.
The Possible Return of Bloemfontein Celtic
Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, has made references to Bloemfontein Celtic's possible comeback. After the club's PSL status was sold in 2021, a number of potential bidders apparently want to move it back to the Free State and reinstate the cherished Siwelele name.
“The people bringing a team to the Free State have concluded another deal, but are under a non-disclosure agreement. Free State soccer is definitely returning,” McKenzie stated on X.
Royal AM’s Decline and Fallout
Once seen as an ambitious project, Royal AM’s tenure has been marked by financial mismanagement, legal disputes, and controversy. The club's reputation has been damaged on several occasions, from deploying Andile Mpisane under dubious circumstances to not paying players like Nurković.
The team's nine-game backlog of games is made worse by the fact that they haven't played since December 29, 2024. While reestablishing the organization's credibility, the new owners will have to overcome these obstacles.
