Nigerian football fans have reacted strongly after Rivers United, coached by former Super Eagles manager Finidi George, suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to reigning CAF Champions League champions Pyramids FC in Egypt. The loss sparked a series of sharp, humorous, and frustrated comments online, with many comparing the game to an “Argentina vs Nigeria” mismatch.

The first half ended without goals, but the match flipped dramatically after the break. Pyramids midfielder Ahmed Atef El Sayed became the star of the night, scoring a brilliant hat-trick. He opened the scoring in the 52nd minute after a defensive error, then doubled the lead five minutes later with a superb header from a Karim Hafez pass. He completed his treble in the 72nd minute with a composed right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner, assisted by Mohamed Reda.

Finidi admitted the team struggled mentally, saying the difference between both halves came down to “concentration, fear… at that moment, the defenders made that mistake; that was the turning point of the match.”

Fans online did not hold back. One wondered, “Is that Argentina vs Nigeria?” Another wrote, “Anything that looks like Argentina vs Nigeria like this na always L for us,” while others blamed the team’s defensive frailties. “Some players played with fear,” one fan said, and another added, “You guys played nonsense… the defensive line was terrible.”

Despite the disappointment, Finidi urged calm and focus. “We have to talk to them and let them mentally prepare… play our home match next week and try to win it,” he said.

Rivers United will now attempt to regroup as they prepare for their next Champions League fixture, hoping to recover from a tough start to their campaign.
