Simba SC of Tanzania clinched first place in Group A of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after a decisive 2-0 victory over Algeria’s CS Constantine on Sunday. The final round also saw Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien secure a dominant 4-0 win against Angola’s Onze Bravos.
Both Simba and Constantine had already qualified for the knockout stages prior to this round, leaving their clash to determine the group winner. Simba finished the group with 13 points, edging Constantine by a single point. Onze Bravos ended third with 7 points, while Sfaxien remained at the bottom with just 3 points.
Kibu Denis broke the tie in the 61st minute, and Cameroonian Lionel Ateba scored in the 79th minute to give Simba the victory. Both goals occurred in the second half.
In the other match, CS Sfaxien opened the scoring early through Mohamed Nasraoui in the 3rd minute, with Firas Sekkouhi doubling the lead in the 33rd minute. Two own goals by Angolan players Messias Peres Neves and Samuel Neves Beng in the 54th and 95th minutes sealed the emphatic win for the Tunisian side.
As group winners, Simba will face a runner-up from one of the other groups in the quarterfinals, while Constantine will take on one of the group winners.
