Shocking twist in England! Rugby ball strikes Ukrainian journalist during Premier League match
A bizarre incident during Brentford's Premier League clash with Liverpool has taken an alarming turn. A rugby ball launched from a nearby building struck Ukrainian journalist Solomiia Solovei in the head while she was working behind the goal.
Details: According to Ukrainian sports outlet Sport.ua, the incident occurred on October 17 during Brentford's 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool. An unidentified man kicked a rugby ball from the roof of a neighbouring apartment building towards the Gtech Community Stadium. The ball hit Solomiia Solovei, who was covering the match behind one of the goals. Fortunately, the journalist was not injured. Premier League representatives subsequently contacted her to obtain testimony as the authorities investigated the incident.
Speaking exclusively to Sport.ua, Solovei explained that being struck by footballs is a familiar occupational hazard when working near the pitch. This time, however, the object arrived from behind and hit her directly on the head. Initially confused, she laughed off the incident without realising that the ball was not a football. Only after looking at where it had landed did she notice its unusual rugby shape.
The journalist added that stewards collected the ball about a minute later and checked whether she was all right. She confirmed that she felt fine and had suffered no apparent injuries. Solovei also expressed her willingness to cooperate with investigators if required. Footage showing the ball being kicked towards the stadium spread rapidly across social media, attracting millions of views and prompting widespread concerns about spectator and staff safety.
It's worth noting that Brentford confirmed the incident had been referred to the police and pledged full cooperation in identifying those responsible. The club emphasised that protecting supporters, employees, players and match officials remains a priority. The match itself ended in a 2-1 victory for Liverpool, while Brentford's Ukrainian midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk received a straight red card before half-time for striking an opponent with his head.
Reminder: Protecting the future at Anfield. Liverpool preparing a new contract for their top wonderkid.
