The football world is in mourning after the tragic passing of José Izquierdo, a 27-year-old central defender for Club Nacional. Juan Izquierdo tragically lost his life last night in a hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.
On August 23, during a Copa Libertadores Round of 16 match against São Paulo, Izquierdo collapsed on the field and experienced clinical death. Though medical personnel managed to revive him, he had been in intensive care ever since. Sadly, his heart could not hold out in the end.
"Nacional expresses its deepest sorrow and shock at the passing of our beloved player, Juan Izquierdo. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and loved ones. The entire Nacional community mourns his irreplaceable loss," the club said in an official statement.
Izquierdo spent most of his career in Uruguay, beginning with Cerro before playing for Liverpool Montevideo, Peñarol, Montevideo Wanderers, and Mexican club San Luis.
