Shocking African News: Ninth-Tier English Goalkeeper George Kamurasi Chosen as Next King of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom
George Desmond Kamurasi is facing an extraordinary career change, with the English non-league goalkeeper selected to become the next king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom.
The 36-year-old currently captains SE Dons in Crayford, but his life could soon move far beyond football after the Tooro royal succession committee chose him to succeed his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
King Oyo died unexpectedly in the United States last month at the age of 34, prompting the kingdom to begin the process of finding his successor.
Reports from Uganda say Kamurasi secured the backing of 15 of the 18 committee members present during Friday’s vote. His appointment is expected to be formally proclaimed after King Oyo’s burial this weekend.
Kamurasi has not publicly addressed the decision. However, Spy Uganda reports that he is hesitant about leaving his life in London to take up his new responsibilities.
