Shearer revealed behind-the-scenes of the almost completed transfer to Manchester United

In 1996, Alan Shearer was one of the leading stars of English football. He had scored four goals at the home Euro 96, and the year before, he became the champion of England with modest Blackburn. That summer, two top clubs were in pursuit of him. One of them, as we know, was Newcastle, and the second was revealed by Shearer himself almost 30 years later.

Details: As the former striker shared in an interview with TNT Sports, that summer he was negotiating not only with the "Magpies" but also with Manchester United. In fact, on one day he spoke with both Kevin Keegan and Sir Alex Ferguson.

For secrecy, the talks were held at the house of the mother-in-law of then-Arsenal midfielder David Platt. He first spoke with the Newcastle manager, and only then with Ferguson, which angered the great Scotsman so much that he swore at Shearer.

Soon, the conversation with Sir Alex went well, and Shearer even began house-hunting in Manchester. But, a few days later, he received another call from Keegan, after which Shearer decided to move to Newcastle. This ultimately happened on July 30, 1996, for a then-record £15 million.
