Sergio Agüero Set to Return to Independiente… in the Senior League
Sergio Agüero is preparing to wear Independiente’s jersey once again, though not for a professional comeback. The 36-year-old former striker is set to join the club’s Senior League team, which features players aged over 35. According to Infobae, Agüero is officially listed in the competition's roster and could debut this Monday against archrival Racing at the Estadio Libertadores de América.
Agüero had previously played briefly in March 2024 during “La Noche del Rey,” a special club event, but had to leave the field after 10 minutes due to a shoulder injury.
Though rumors once suggested a return to top-flight football under Carlos Tevez, Agüero ultimately declined. His cardiologist had even said that 20 minutes on the pitch wouldn’t pose a health risk, but Agüero admitted it would require an intense physical commitment and disrupt his current lifestyle.
His ties to the club remain strong. His son Benjamín now plays in Independiente’s youth system, and Agüero frequently visits to support him. While his professional career is firmly in the past, the “Kun” will now get to enjoy football again in familiar colors, this time without the pressure of elite competition.
