In his autobiography Oltre, excerpts from which were published by the respected Corriere della Sera, the 48-year-old Italian confirmed that talk of his return to professional football in 2024 was completely true—not a joke.

According to Totti, Genoa under Alberto Gilardino and ambitious Como, led by Cesc Fàbregas, showed serious interest in signing him. Genoa's executives made direct contact, while Gilardino personally sent messages to the veteran. Francesco treated the offer with complete seriousness: he began following a strict diet, cut out bread and sweets, completed three gym sessions and two physiotherapy sessions every week.
