Senegalese Coach Habib Beye Leads Rennes to Strong Start, Aims for Long-Term Success
As the new head coach of Stade Rennais, former Senegal international Habib Beye has had an outstanding start, leading his team to two straight Ligue 1 victories.
Due to his achievement, he is only the third manager in the club's history to accomplish this.
Beye, 47, took on the task of managing in one of Europe's top five leagues after managing Red Star FC in the lesser leagues of France.
Given how underrepresented African coaches are in the top division of European football, his appointment marks a critical turning moment for the sport. “I am a proud representative of Senegal, France, and the entire African continent,” Beye said.
Beye has quickly imposed his tactical philosophy on the team. After victories against RC Strasbourg (1-0) and AS Saint-Étienne (2-0), he emphasized the importance of player commitment and adaptability.
"The players' reactions are good. During games, we've switched methods several times, and they're accepting the level of intensity needed," he said.
He also acknowledged that psychological drive and team cohesion were important contributors to Rennes' early success under his direction.
While the two wins have boosted confidence, Beye remains cautious, insisting that Rennes must aim for 13 more victories to secure a strong finish in Ligue 1. “We must stay focused. There are still 13 wins to go. We take it one match at a time,” he stated.
Beye’s appointment meant he had to step down from his role as a TV pundit for Canal+, where he had been a key voice in Champions League coverage. Sidney Govou has now been named as his replacement, with his first commentary set for February 11.
The key match against LOSC Lille will be Rennes' next test and will determine whether Beye's influence can last. He might open the door for future African coaches to be successful in Europe's top divisions if his impressive start holds up.
