Senegal's national team triumphed over Mali in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16, smoothly advancing to the quarter-finals. This marks their fourth victory in five matches at this tournament, a run reminiscent of their 2022 campaign that ended in glory.
Details: According to Opta, Senegal has now secured a fourth win in a single Africa Cup of Nations edition for the fourth time in its history. The "Lions of Teranga" previously achieved this feat in the 2002, 2019, and 2022 tournaments.
In 2002 and 2019, Senegal won 4 and 5 matches respectively, but ultimately finished as the tournament's runners-up. Their most successful campaign came at AFCON 2022, when Senegal claimed four wins and, for the first time in their history, lifted the continental trophy. That year in Cameroon, Senegal edged Egypt in the final, prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Worth noting: in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal will face the winner of the Egypt vs Ivory Coast clash. The semi-final showdown is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14.
Reminder: Senegal winger Sadio Mané has created 14 goalscoring chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He is now just a few shy of breaking the all-time record.
