Senegal left-back Ismail Jakobs announces his retirement from international football
Ismail Jakobs will no longer wear the Senegal shirt. The left-back announced his decision in a post on Instagram, thereby confirming the speculation that had emerged during the last international break.
The defender’s absence from the Lions of Teranga’s most recent squad had fuelled rumours of a possible departure from the national team. Manager Patrick Vieira had, however, indicated that the player was expected to rejoin the squad during the next FIFA window.
But Ismail Jakobs has ultimately chosen to bring his international career to a close. In his post, the 27-year-old, who has 33 caps for Senegal, reflected on his time with the Lions and expressed his gratitude to Senegal.
“I joined the national team as a young boy, and I’m leaving it as a man. Senegal welcomed me with open arms. I’ve always given 100 per cent for our country. Today, it’s time to start a new chapter and focus on my club career and my family. Jerejef for everything.”
The defender thus brings an important chapter of his career to a close and has now chosen to devote himself to his club commitments.
