Senegal Fans Return Home After Royal Pardon Following AFCON Final Arrests in Morocco
Several Senegal supporters detained in Morocco after the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year have finally returned home following a pardon granted by the Moroccan king.
According to the Senegalese Football Federation, the group arrived at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass at around 1 am local time on Sunday.
The supporters were warmly welcomed on arrival by Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who personally received them at Dakar’s international airport.
Speaking after their arrival, President Faye expressed his joy at seeing the fans safely back in Senegal.
“We’re very happy to have them back on Senegalese soil,” he said while dressed in Senegal national team colours.
The supporters had been detained following incidents linked to the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco in January.
