Sekhukhune United Edge Past Milford FC to Reach Nedbank Cup Quarterfinals
Sekhukhune United booked their place in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Milford FC at Magogo Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
First-Half Brilliance from Mntambo
Despite challenging pitch conditions, Sekhukhune took control after an early Milford surge. Captain Linda Mntambo opened the scoring in the 20th minute, smashing home a cross from Shaune Mogaila. He doubled the lead 13 minutes later, capitalizing on a precise cutback from Vuyo Letlapa to put Babina Noko in command.
Just before halftime, Milford FC reacted, giving the lower-division team a ray of hope when Menzi Chilli took advantage of a mistake made by goalkeeper Lloydt Kazapua to fire home from close range.
Second-Half Resilience
In the second half, Milford applied constant pressure, making Sekhukhune play deep defense. As Milford tried to level in the final minutes, substitute goalie Badra Sangaré was instrumental, making five critical stops.
Sifiso Mdluli came agonizingly close to leveling the score late in the match, but his shot rattled the crossbar and bounced over. Sekhukhune’s defense held firm, securing a tense victory and progression to the next round.
Next Challenge: Mamelodi Sundowns
In the quarterfinals, Sekhukhune will now have to meet the formidable Mamelodi Sundowns of Africa. They will be confident because of their tenacity against Milford, but they will need to perform at their peak to take on the defending champions.
