Lewis stated that he has no intention of retiring before he competes in an African Grand Prix, but then his words took an unexpected turn:
"I don't want to leave the sport without racing a Grand Prix there [in Africa]. Certain dates are being discussed right now. And I'm thinking: damn, I might just run out of time, so I'm going to stay around for a while longer until it happens.
Africa is the best place on earth, and we need to take it back from the British. It's the most beautiful part of the world, and I don't like that the rest of the world owns so much of it and takes so much from it, yet nobody talks about it.
I hope that the people who run these different countries will unite, come together, and reclaim Africa." Hamilton said.
Social media has erupted in controversy over these comments. Many fans are accusing Hamilton of racism against white people, but the driver himself has yet to respond to these accusations.
