The DR Congo Championship kicked off in early October, and less than two months into the season, a major scandal erupted, leading to severe punishments.
Details: The head coach of Group A leaders – Saint-Éloi Lupopo, Belgian Luc Eymael, made offensive remarks towards an opponent during one of his tactical sessions. He referred to the opposing goalkeeper’s skin color in derogatory terms, and his coaching staff used a term synonymous with women of easy virtue.
The local football federation was harsh in its response. Eymael received a six-month suspension, but his club expressed support for their coach and even found a way for him to continue managing the team. According to journalist Ebenezer Michael Deverson, Eymael gave tactical instructions over the phone during the match against Sanga-Balende.
Reminder: Eymael’s team remains at the top of the league table with 21 points from 8 matches.
