The timing makes the gesture particularly striking. On September 15, it was reported that Gabriel had formally asked Manchester United to cancel his registration with immediate effect, which would allow him to become a free agent. The request surprised the club, especially as the teenager had been moving closer to a competitive first-team debut after impressing at youth level.

Garnacho himself left Manchester United for Chelsea in the summer of 2025 in a £40 million transfer after a difficult final period at Old Trafford.
