Croatia refuses to stay silent following the refereeing scandal in their match against Portugal.
Details: The Croatian Football Federation has sent a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, expressing deep disappointment and disagreement over the officiating in the game against Portugal.
The federation emphasized that this is not just about debatable decisions, which are a common topic after every match, but about the very process that led to these calls.
Croatia’s main grievance concerns the penalty awarded to Portugal. The federation believes the VAR protocol was applied completely incorrectly, and that the head referee should not have been advised to review the incident on the monitor.
Even greater outrage was sparked by the disallowed goal by Joško Gvardiol. According to the Croatian side, Mario Pašalić was ruled offside due to an alleged interference by Igor Matanović, which, based on the federation’s interpretation of sensor data, simply did not happen.
The Croatian Football Federation labeled the situation an abuse of technology, stressing that such use of VAR benefits neither FIFA, nor the teams, nor the fans.
The federation admitted that the letter would not lessen the pain and disappointment felt by players and fans, but insists it is crucial to formally address FIFA and demand detailed explanations for all contentious decisions.
