Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni made a surprising statement ahead of the World Cup, commenting on the possible participation of Lionel Messi in the tournament. According to the manager, the final decision will be made by the player himself.
Scaloni emphasized that he has no intention of putting pressure on the team’s captain and believes that such a decision should be made solely by the player.
My position is clear: I will do everything possible to make sure he can play at the World Cup. I think he should be there for the sake of football. But it’s not up to me. Everything depends on him—on his physical and mental condition. He deserves the time to think things over calmly. We’re not in a hurry. Whatever decision he makes will be the best one for him and for the team. But of course, I hope he stays with us," the coach remarked.
Previously, Messi stated that the last World Cup would be his final one, but the situation may change. Despite his age, the 38-year-old forward continues to play for the national team and remains a key figure in their setup.
At the upcoming World Cup, Argentina will compete in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
