Sarri Reveals NFF Contact as Dele-Bashiru’s AFCON Hopes Remain Uncertain
Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has explained the situation surrounding Fisayo Dele-Bashiru as the midfielder awaits a possible AFCON call-up from Nigeria. Dele-Bashiru has been sidelined for two months with a long-term injury, missing four Nigeria games and eight Serie A matches since September. Although the 24-year-old only just returned to full training, his match fitness remains in doubt ahead of the tournament.
Speaking before Lazio’s recent league game, Sarri confirmed communication with the Nigerian Football Federation. He said, "They asked me to wait two or three days, and that's fine." The coach added that while "Dele could have been available," he had not played for two months and could manage “fifteen minutes at most.”
After Lazio’s 2-0 win over Lecce, Sarri revealed he had planned to bring the midfielder back earlier but "the club then asked me to wait another week." Dele-Bashiru now hopes to regain fitness as Nigeria finalises its AFCON squad.
