Santiago Márquez, Son of Rafa Márquez, Retires From Football at 22

Santiago Márquez, son of former Mexico captain Rafa Márquez, has officially retired from professional football at just 22 years old, XEU Deportes reported. The young midfielder shared his decision in a heartfelt Instagram post, citing a loss of passion and disillusionment with the sport.

“After a lot of thought, talks with my family, and deep reflection, I’ve decided to say goodbye to football,” wrote Márquez. He admitted that while his dream was always to follow in his father’s footsteps—playing top-tier football and making it to Europe—he gradually lost motivation due to factors beyond his control.

A product of Atlas’ academy, Márquez had short stints with Necaxa, York United in Canada, and Atlante. Despite his aspirations, he explained that the reality of football, often shaped by others’ decisions, ultimately left him disappointed.

“Football can be cruel—not just because of injuries, but because many decisions are made for you,” he wrote. Now stepping away from the game, Márquez says he’s ready to pursue new goals and dreams outside the sport.
