San Lorenzo Targets Saúl Salcedo Despite Transfer Ban Over Debt
Despite interim president Julio Lopardo’s claim that San Lorenzo would not pursue signings until clearing outstanding debts, the club has opened talks for defender Saúl Salcedo, currently with Newell’s Old Boys, TyC Sports reported. The Paraguayan center-back is no longer part of coach Cristian Fabbiani’s plans and has been benched in five of the last nine games.
The 27-year-old is being considered by San Lorenzo as a potential replacement for Jhohan Romaña or Gastón Hernández, both of whom could leave during this window. Salcedo has a strong résumé in Argentine football, with 86 appearances for Huracán and a stint with the Paraguay national team.
After returning to Olimpia, where he played over 100 matches from 2020 to 2024, he rejoined the Argentine league with Newell’s, but now seeks a new chapter.
The transfer, however, hinges on San Lorenzo lifting four separate transfer bans totaling over $2.2 million—owed to Diego Rodríguez, Monterrey, Austin FC, and Cristian Zapata. Lopardo acknowledged the issue, stating that signing new players without resolving debts would be irresponsible and that no deals would move forward until payments are made.
